Proposed in 1973 by HRH Princess Basma, as what was known then as the “National Population Commission”, renamed in 2002, restructured in 2012, the council is currently under the chairmanship of the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation. The council’s mission is to act as the reference for all population & development related issues and information , to facilitate setting policies, strategies and action plans in accordance with best practices, and monitor and evaluate their implementation in addition to advocating and raising awareness about them and enhancing national capabilities in this area in coordination with partners and stakeholders to achieve sustainable development, justice and equal opportunities.
